US oil imports at lowest level since 1999 as trade gap shrinks

The Christian Science Monitor -- America’s trade deficit shrank in the final month of last year – from $48.6 billion in November to $38.5 billion in December – in part because imports of oil fell to their lowest level since 1999.

That news, released by the Commerce Department Friday, is an encouraging indicator that America is using energy more efficiently, and making more energy at home, reducing the country’s reliance on imported oil.

Overall US exports rose, which is encouraging on two fronts. First, it’s a vital source of US jobs. Second, it shows a bit of pep in global demand at a time when some forecasters had been warning of economic weakness outside the US.

The improvement in America’s foreign trade picture also provides a surprise boost to

And oil production from federal land and water is at the lowest level in years too. If it weren't for the drilling on private and state land, we would be importing more oil than we have in many years. If Obama would stop obstructing drilling on federal land and water, oil prices would drop.

yeah, so what?????????

gas prices are at the highest level at this time of the year

that is exactly why i don't care about the so-called "energy independence" as i don't see much relevance here between the two

The change in trade balance could cause the dollar rise which would cause another change in the balance.

Then why are gas/oil prices on the rise? Answer: the greed of the oil companies drives the market.

Exactly, JennyHK.

Record low demand, high inventory levels, record breaking exports, with the most production and discoveries in years - yet we pay record high gas prices.

If the US oil companies would stop exporting their oil just to make room for the crap from the Middle East that Oscuma demands they make room for. He has to take care of his raghead buddies.

Oil imports shrink so now gas prices will go up. Yet if oil imports increase, gas prices go up. It lays to rest that old principle of "supply and demand."
