‘Trains or pipelines,’ Doer warns U.S. over Keystone

The Globe and Mail -- Canada is telling the U.S administration it will see a sharp increase in cross-border crude-oil shipments by rail if President Barack Obama fails to approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

In a telephone interview from Washington, Canadian Ambassador Gary Doer said oil companies are increasingly turning to trains – and even trucks – as the construction of pipelines has failed to keep up with the boom in North American crude production, and that trend will grow if the President turns down Keystone XL.

“His choice is to have it come down by a pipeline that he approves, or without his approval, it comes down on trains. That’s just the raw common sense of this thing, and we’ve been saying it for two years and we’ve been proven correct,” Mr. Doer said Sunday. “At the end of the day,

‘Trains or pipelines,’ Doer warns U.S. over Keystone? A crude oil pipeline is much safer and less costly then transport by railroad or truck! All three forms of transport will have their risks and a pipeline will have the least 'problems.' Building a refinery at the source of the crude oil is expensive and not very practicable. You want to move the crude oil, with all the potential products inside, at one time to a refinery instead of transporting separate products individually to their final destination.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

After seeing what happened in Quebec last month they should approve the pipeline . The safests fastest way to get it to market . Don't want another 47 dead caused a train dereailing of oil tankers .

gocatgo - I commend you, more readers need to do their own research before commenting.
Jrsva - America is already getting all of it, and it's being cracked in American refineries and being used presently in your vehs.
Sorry to be the bearer of that bad news, guess you can boycott it, and not drive around.
If America does not want it, rest assured your pump prices will probably be higher then they are in Canada.

it's not the fault of the intelligent voters here-we knew nobama was a train wreck waiting to happen..the uninformed voters and those with their hands out saw an easy opportunity to get something for nothing, but they just don't possess the intelligence to know that their gravy train will derail very soon..

It is desirable to have conventional Canadian crude oil come into the USA via pipeline or rail or whatever. The problem is with the tar-sands ‘oil,’ actually bitumen, that is dirty and corrosive. Canada would be better off to leave it in the ground but if they are going to mine it the US will be better off if it is not allowed to cross the border.

Regardless of how the oil is transported from Canada their importance cannot be overstated as a supplier of oil to America. Oil from Canada. Please note Canada is our #1 oil supplier in the world.

Always the same old question. What's is the better way? If we have an accident with a train, it's the pipeline and if we have an accident with the pipeline it's the train. So...

I am only directing this to those few that have no clue what they are making comments on!

America just to let you know, Canada exports approximately 98% of Cdn crude to America where it is refined and consumed.
Sorry to disappoint you, many of you are already driving around w/the "refined in America, Dirty Bitumen"
bor sht - Take a look at the map, see where the Bakken formation is; that's right half is within Canada. Canada also has sweet oil, and conventional oil wells; no different the Texas or Saudi Arabia. Yes we have heavy oil and so does other countries like Venezuelan Orinoco heavy oil.
China purchased a very small Cdn company in the oil patch, as a Possible foothold into the Cdn oil market.
Whats comes of this, Canada is suddenly selling all of its oil to China. False, China would probably like that; as it stands at present, its all going to America. Canada controls its own resources, just like every other country.
So you don't want the cheaper Cdn crude (sells much lower $$ per barrel on oil markets, granted your not getting the benefit at the pumps, and neither are we. It's being pocketed, by your beloved oil conglomerates.
So when, Canada develops it own East-West, all Cdn. pipeline within territorial Canada, good chance then we will then utilize with Canada, export refined product. Maybe then, that 98% begins to dry up, then America is forced to import from your other friends like Russia, Venezuela, Mid-East, etc. America still imports large quantities of crude to supply your insatiable energy appetite.
America, does not just shoot itself in the foot, but seems to want to fall on a grenade (hara-kiri).
I can't believe all the inane comments based on rhetoric and urban legends, falsehoods etc. Wish commentators here would investigate before commenting.
I am only directing this to those few that have no clue what they are making comments on!
