Traffic Cameras Unleash Chaos

Real Clear Technology -- Each day, thousands of cars - sometimes as many as 18,000 - rolled along Elmwood Place's streets, crossing the third-of-a-mile town to get to neighboring Cincinnati or major employers in bustling suburbs or heavily traveled Interstate 75. Many zipped by Elmwood Place's modest homes and small businesses at speeds well above the 25 mph limit.

Bedeviled by tight budgets, the police force was undermanned. The situation, villagers feared, was dangerous.

Then the cameras were turned on, and all hell broke loose.

Like hundreds of other U.S. communities big and small, Elmwood Place hired an outside company to install cameras to record traffic violations and mail out citations.

In the first month after the cameras began operating, late last year, 6,600 tickets went out - more than triple th

blu: I'm with you. "all hell broke loose" isn't quite the right description. Though it sounds good and raises emotions.

I agree.... all about the money, esp. when "hiring outside companies."

old story, but I think describing it as "chaos" is a bit overblown.

Also, so they are upset because they run stop lights all the time and finally got caught? did they have a "trial run" with the cameras first? Was it announced in the local paper and new stations?

I am not for camers, they are just a money grab by cities/counties. If it is truly about safety, then put the money in crime victims fund or something that they can't get their hands on. You would not see near the number of cameras.

Two things needed to be done before any tickets should have been issued. First the locals should have been made aware of the lights, second to be fair signs should have been posted to make the drivers aware. Here in Marietta, GA signs are posted well in advance of the location of the cameras.

"Why not randomly stop drivers as they go through town and demand $100? It is the same thing, and would require a lot less in overhead costs!"

Do you not realize how stupid that sounds?
You would advocate extorting money from people who may be obeying the law. Camera-generated tickets are sent to people who are breaking the law and endangering the lives and property of others.

Traffic Cameras Unleash Chaos. Drive the speed limit or pay, pay, pay!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

I figure I ran enough red lights and rolled through 4 way stops to save enough gas money for one ticket. Maybe not!

Best way to get rid of the cameras is to stop getting tickets. No tickets no money, no money no profit. Stop whining like a victim, take control and pay attention.

Speeding, running red lights and stop signs is life-threatening and a VIOLATION OF THE LAW. Here we have a Judge who says it is against the law for a community to punish lawbreakers through the use of modern technology. If this issue is ever brought before, and accepted for review by, the Supreme Court it will be upheld. There may be some general rules attached by the Court to the use of this technology, but its use will be upheld.

I try to drive safely and within the law... having witnessed several serious accidents by cars running red lights, I feel like red light cameras are a good thing... I just do not see the argument that being caught violating the law (speed limit, red light, etc.) by a camera is such an invasion... as a violator, you CHOSE to break the law and assumed the risk of a ticket

Cameras have no place in enforcing the law. In Chicago, where everything the goverment does seems a bit shady, they are used to collect money. Plain and simple.

The governmet gets used to that income from traffic tickets and then spends it. Then the government needs more money. What's next?

I've never had to pay a fine from a camera ticket because I don't break the law. I don't see the point in these cameras other than a revenue stream.

Drivers should treat signs and signals as the law instead of just a mere suggestion. Pay up if you were in the wrong.

No issues for everyone who's stop ends with the slight "rock back" ... you all know EXACTLY what that feels like.

You'll never be concerned with a right on red light [when permitted] .... and "running red lights ACTUALLY causes accidents and deaths.

Way to go! Make your point with a photo of a dragster! July 1 article - almost a week old.

"Then the cameras were turned on, and all hell broke loose." Who are you kidding?

If you drive within the speed LIMIT, you will not have a problem. Yesterday I crossed under a yellow light that had turned yellow as I crossed the pedestrian crosswalk. In my rearview mirror I saw 4 vehicles that came through the intersection AFTER the light had turned red. They all would have been sent citations if that intersection had cameras.

Red light cameras have resulted in DECREASED severe accidents although minor fender benders have increased at some intersections as those who feel they are ENTITLED expect the vehicle in front to run the red light. Get THOSE ENTITLEDs off the road and they will be safer. I am tired of people who think they are ENTITLED and fly past me at 15-20 MPH above the speed LIMIT. Maybe I'll start marking them with a paintball instead of using my ice bullets.

I'll bet if you're "connected" a politician, a member of law enforcement or just a close friend of some so called official you'll never see a citation in the mail no matter how many red lights you run, in this country we have one set of laws for us, and another for them, theirs is much more lenient.
