The Military is Going Green

WOAI -- FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) - A West Texas military base says it plans to have the largest solar energy farm in the U.S. military.Fort Bliss commander Gen. Dana Pittard said Friday the 20-megawatt solar farm is expected to provide about a third of the base's electric needs. The farm will join two other solar projects that have a combined output of 14.8 megawatts.Construction on the project, being built by El Paso Electric, will begin next year and should be completed by the end of 2015. It's the first time the Army has partnered with a local utility on a renewable energy project of this size.Pittard says the project is part of an effort that will allow Fort Bliss to produce all of its energy by 2018.

Since the project will allow Bliss to produce ALL of its energy by 2018...... are the naysayers fighting because it could be energy self-sufficient... or close to it....

With no trees and a big area next to the tank tracks, that's ideal for solar. Go for it!

"One of our engineers calculated that the payback for this alternative energy was somewhere north of 300 years." That engineer either misplaced the decimal point or used highly bloated cost estimates.

Oh, they'll achieve it, alright....Regardless of what it costs. Out where I work, our management wanted to show the Dept. of Energy how "green" they were by installing solar panels to completely run the building. One of our engineers calculated that the payback for this alternative energy was somewhere north of 300 years. Makes perfect economic sense, right? And THAT, is why this country will never dig itself out of the hole it has created.

another waste of tax dollars. Solar electric does not pay for itself when compared to utility rates. Sure if you just want to spend millions of dollars the energy is cheap... but those millions are diverted from better use.

The Military is Going Green? Military 'Green' means taxpayer money being used. The military has been going green for many years now with electrical power and biofuel. The farther south the base or green production site is, the better for solar panel electrical production.
For non military installations, install Solar Panels and/or Wind Turbines on the roofs of malls, warehouses, Walmart, Costco, USPS, UPS, airports and many other roofs that are not normally considered as an electrical generating area. Produce the electricity locally, not buying off the grid, with less tranmission 'problems' to get the electricity to where it is needed. A site survey for each installation to make sure the area considered is reasonable for the cost of installation and local conditions are good for electrical production.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

A farm growing solar panels may be a more productive than growing sagebrush and lizards.
