Sharp rise in texting while driving tickets in NY State in 2013

WGRZ - NBC Channel 10 - Albany -- - If you text and drive, you're increasingly likely to get ticketed.

With stronger laws and greater enforcement, texting-while-driving tickets in New York leaped 82 percent in 2013 compared to 2012, records show. Outside New York City, the increase was 89 percent.

In 26 of New York's 62 counties, the number of texting tickets more the doubled over the past year.

Police issued roughly 55,000 texting tickets statewide in 2013, up from about 30,000 in 2012.

NY State Police Trooper Victor Morales says it's much like the spike you historically saw in tickets issued for cell phone use, and seat belt use, when those laws were first put in place.

ok.

I have a better idea lets go get the trillions of dollars back from big oil that they have stolen from the american people at the pump, and then reregulate them as an object lesson.

So glad to read this! The new Motto should be -Friends Don't Let Friends Text While Driving - Don't answer their Texts!

Common sense if they aren't getting an answer back , they will stop!
But I forgot common sense passed away a long time ago!

Texting takes a significant amount of attention. That level of attention deficit will cause an accident eventually. Do not text and drive.

Can California’s Clean Energy Ambitions Survive the Shale Oil and Gas Surge? State leaders are considering how the development of fossil resources will impact the state’s ambitious goal to cut greenhouse gasemissions 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050. California has about 63% of the shale oil resources in the US. Texas 20% and North Dakota 17%.
Fossil fuels will be around for a very long time to come.
More fracking, more chance to pollute the surface and underground waters. Properly treat the fracking water so it can be released safely on the surface. Recycle water into the underground rocks fracturing Only if there are NO contaminates or pollutants injected into the underground water and rock system at the same time. ****It doesn't help when they put diesel in the fracking water! ***So much for the available water!
Anyone for flaming water from the kitchen faucet? How about More earthquakes from additional ground water and fracking operations?
We need clean drinkable water and uncontaminated lakes and streams!
It takes more natural gas to go the same distance as gasoline or diesel, natural gas does not have the same amount of energy that gasoline or diesel has.
As more and more natural gas is used for various things/items, watch for the price to go up and up. I need natural gas to heat my water and keep my house warm during the heating season, there is no need for higher natural gas prices.
Drive vehicles with high mpg, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

With a bigger population in the state of New York than Ontario, it issued 55,000 tickets. That's less than the nearly 64,000 handed out up north.

Just don't do it! Very simple..... But some will, no matter what the penalty is, even if it means they will kill someone. There are those who have no regard for their lives or others, their lives are so screwed up already and they don't care about you and me, these type of people don't stop for stop signs, speed way over the speed limit, cut people off because they think getting ahead on the road will put them in in a better position than everyone else. The only way to deal with them is to get them off the road period, but that's never going to happen, so they persist until they kill themselves or others.

Fines and penalties will not matter. Just like with people that drink and drive, they do it without regard for anybody else; whether it be stupidity or addiction. Just like with the story of the elderly lady in Texas that damn near killed a motorcyclist when she went down an up ramp, she denies that she did it and the law allowed her to get her license reinstated.

You can not stop someone that is determined to do something unless you lock them up. There was a local elderly lady that years ago had her license taken from her and her car insurance cancelled because she kept getting into accidents. But she was financially well to do, so just did what she wanted to do and kept driving, kept getting into accidents and would just pay the fines.

Moral of the story, if the don't care, they just don't care.

Anyone who has tried to text and drive, knows darn good and well that it's just better to not even do it, it just requires too much lost focus for the road. When someone texts me while I'm on the road, I just ignore it. If its important, they can call me and talk through my car Bluetooth system. I hate typing anyway, talking hands free is so much safer. If I gotta write stuff down, I just tell the caller to call back and leave it on my voice mail, they always understand, especially when you tell them you are on the road.

I hope they made the fines stiff enough to be a deterrent as well. A texting driver is the most dangerous thing we face on the road today and they are everywhere, every age, any time, day or night.
