Rhode Island company wins first offshore wind auction

SouthCoast Today -- With a $3.8 million bid, Rhode Island's Deepwater Wind New England won the nation's first offshore wind energy auction Wednesday. The company's bid gives it the rights to develop both halves of an offshore wind energy area located south of and straddling Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management had split the 164,750-acre area, roughly 2½ times the size of Nantucket, into two portions for development. Deepwater Wind beat out two other developers, Sea Breeze Energy LLC and US Wind Inc, to purchase the entire area after 11 rounds of bidding.

"This is an enormous step forward for the industry. This is the best site for offshore wind in the United States, bar none," Deepwater Wind CEO Jeffrey Grybowski said in a statement.

Rhode Island company wins first offshore wind auction. Take a chance and see if it was worth it to spend that much money to produce renewable wind turbine energy. The area has enough wind to produce power and the wind is usually always moving one way or another, now lets see if it was worth the effort. There will be extra maintenance needed for the area it is in, that can reduce future profits. More successful renewable energy farms, less fossil fuel electrical generating plants.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Honestly, I'm old-school and would rather read news articles about fossil fuels than alternative energy.

After it is built, it will be found to interfere with the breeding of sharks, or worse yet, barnacles.

Okay, how many offshore birds are going to be slaughtered?

If a bird falls by the blade of a turbine miles offshore, does it leave a red spot?

Let's hope the project is successful. It could be a win-win for everyone if the fossil fuel dinosaurs will not interfere.

Wind is incapable of supplying reliable or economical power. Also, to cover the total loss of power when the wind drops or blows too hard, every wind farm needs a conventional back-up power station (commonly diesel or gas-fired) with capacity at least twice the design capacity of the wind farm to even out the sudden fluctuations in the electricity grid.

It should be interesting how this plays out considering some lack of interest in wind development from some corners of the area.

It is so senseless to put these offshore. There is reason they can't be onshore and placed in known windy areas.

Now this makes a lot of sense and I'm not much on wind. The landscape will not be affected and the wind turbines will not be seen from land.
