Rail trumps pipeline for oil companies

Bismarck Tribune -- When Oneok Partners LP recently pulled its proposed $1.8 billion, 1,300-mile pipeline -- to connect North Dakota’s Bakken crude oil production with refineries in Tulsa, Okla. -- many people here were caught off guard. There had been a steady drum beat of demand for more pipelines to get the state’s crude to market and reduce price discounting for sweet Bakken crude.

However, derailment = spill and costs are higher. Of course, given how the energy picture is changing, I can certainly see where one may worry about how useful a pipeline may be 20 years from now.

But the big increases in domestic oil production have created an over supply in the Tulsa area. That’s where the Bakken Express was headed, and that’s where Keystone XL intends to connect before heading to the Gulf." The Keystone XL's purpose is to EXPORT crude oil!! Wake up America!

Rail satisfies the immediate need and can apparently handle the volume. Probably a lot of rail cars being built to handle the required huge volume.
