Oregon Energy Department re-evaluating $30 million in tax credits to wind farm

The Oregonian -- The Oregon Department of Energy says it is re-examining its recent approval of $30 million in tax credits to the Shepherd's Flat wind farm in eastern Oregon, and has consulted the Dept. of Justice.

The developer of the mammoth wind farm, New York-based Caithness Energy, went though the legal exercise of subdividing the project on paper to qualify for three separate, $10 million state subsidies. The Energy Department approved them in the last six months, despite sufficient evidence in two of its own analyses to define the wind farm as a single facility, deserving only one tax credit.

Now that the incentives are out the door, the state's ability to recover taxpayers' money would depend on whether Caithness misrepresented its project in filings with the state.

Make sure everything has passed the 'required tests' to approve projects like this. Everything is checked, the T's are crossed and the i's are dotted before any money is approved for state tax credit spending. Maybe the state did not do their required tests? Is this gas price related? Make sure your own state has NEVER done anything wrong or questionable before raggin' on Oregon! Renewable energy from solar, wind, hydro, thermal, tidal and/or nuclear. Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Cal Edison is having financial problems too. On top of that a number of utilities in the Pacific Northwest invested in wind energy in anticipation of financial gains speculating that California would buy all this wind power when power is being sold at peak prices due to demand. Then the economy tanked and there is no demand. It all fell apart. The tax credit is just one of the flaws in the plan.
