Kia may be best brand for skinflint car owners

MSNBC -- There are plenty of bargain-priced cars, trucks and crossovers, but that doesn’t always mean they add up to a good deal. Smart shoppers know there are lots of ways costs can quickly get out of control when you own a car, from insurance to fuel economy to maintenance and repairs.

And that’s why a new study from Kelly Blue Book is focusing on what really matters: the total cost of ownership. And there, the data-tracking website concludes, Kia is the clear standout as the top brand among all manufacturers when the entire ownership experience is tallied up. Audi was the No. 1 luxury brand when measured by total cost of ownership.

They might even be reasonably inexpensive to run." Kia and Hyundai are owned by the same parent company and built on similar platforms but Kias are not built by Hyundai.

Bought a 2005 Malibu, in 2008 for $10000. Had to make one repair at $300. Gets 30mpg and is a good drive. In 2015 when it hits 10 years, I might get rid of it. So far it's been 3 years, and even though I don't know oil change prices, I'd guess on average the yearly cost is $3500 and every year I own it that price will drop! Some people just don't know how to save!

I see a lot of 5 yr old Kias needing new engines.

It is not the only factor, but did come into play when narrowing the field down from the three finalist.

Great vehicle for the $'s--heated leather seats, moon roof, temp control ac/heat, all for ~$25k. Handled well with plenty of acceleration and not bad gas mileage for a SUV. Currently driving a '11 Hyundai Elantra. Same heated leather seats, moon roof, but no temp control ac/heat for ~$21k. Tight steering (maybe too tight for some, but just the way I like it), good acceleration to get into traffic and fabulous gas mileage. I think the Koreans are on to something when it comes to adding value to vehicles without emptying your wallet. As for all the chatter about the Volt, I find it interesting the article is comparing it to an SUV and a mid-size and it still costs more. I am glad the American made Volt beat out the Leaf. Interesting coverage on Volt, and its usually cheaper (in the end) to spend the money to fix problems when they first occur, or to prevent them in the first place.

I know a lot of people that don't take care of the maintenance when it is minor and cheap. They wait until their is a bigger problem and usually that also involves a larger cost.

It was even more surprising to see the praise from the author as there (unfortunately) are so many "haters"....if I didn't love my Escape as much as I do, there would be a black Volt in my driveway.
