"Kia cars are built by Hyundai and they're not bad these days. They might even be reasonably inexpensive to run."
Kia and Hyundai are owned by the same parent company and built on similar platforms but Kias are not built by Hyundai.

My cost to ownership is not even close to being that high? $35000 plus, really?
Bought a 2005 Malibu, in 2008 for $10000. Had to make one repair at $300. Gets 30mpg and is a good drive. In 2015 when it hits 10 years, I might get rid of it. So far it's been 3 years, and even though I don't know oil change prices, I'd guess on average the yearly cost is $3500 and every year I own it that price will drop!
Some people just don't know how to save!

Could be, but with skinflint comes nitpick and these type of owners drive themselves nuts over the cheapest Kia Rio.
I see a lot of 5 yr old Kias needing new engines.

The reliability history of the brand is still dubious so I'll hold off the endorsement for now.

Good products at a resonable price - maybe the big three should take note.

KIA? My brother-in-law owned a Kia when he was in the military 5-6 years ago...said he would never own one again. Maybe they've changed but I don't think I'd ever own one myself.....

How can they estimate cost of ownership for new models with unknown reliability?

The TCO for vehicles has been a buzz word for over ten years and I have used it when buying my last two vehicles. It is not the only factor, but did come into play when narrowing the field down from the three finalist.

What about the best car for red necks and crackers? What else would you expect in a title from MSNBC?

Had a '05 Kia Sonata. Great vehicle for the $'s--heated leather seats, moon roof, temp control ac/heat, all for ~$25k. Handled well with plenty of acceleration and not bad gas mileage for a SUV.
Currently driving a '11 Hyundai Elantra. Same heated leather seats, moon roof, but no temp control ac/heat for ~$21k. Tight steering (maybe too tight for some, but just the way I like it), good acceleration to get into traffic and fabulous gas mileage.
I think the Koreans are on to something when it comes to adding value to vehicles without emptying your wallet.
As for all the chatter about the Volt, I find it interesting the article is comparing it to an SUV and a mid-size and it still costs more. I am glad the American made Volt beat out the Leaf. I guess we are "queen of the pigs." :-)

Interesting that Kia is #1 in economy & Audi #1 in luxury car total cost of ownership - who would have thought it?

Agree, with both cmptrmush and matman01. Interesting coverage on Volt, and its usually cheaper (in the end) to spend the money to fix problems when they first occur, or to prevent them in the first place.

I would imagine that how a car is maintained can vary the overall dollar amount considerably. I know a lot of people that don't take care of the maintenance when it is minor and cheap. They wait until their is a bigger problem and usually that also involves a larger cost.

I found it interesting that the Volt got so much attention in this article. It was even more surprising to see the praise from the author as there (unfortunately) are so many "haters"....if I didn't love my Escape as much as I do, there would be a black Volt in my driveway.
