Houston to become the capital of renewable energy in the United States?

iTechPost -- Houston, Texas has announced that it will be purchasing two million dollars worth of electricity created by renewable sources. This will make Houston, Texas, once a symbol of oil, the largest municipal consumer, by dollars, of renewable energy.

This buy of 140 megawatts (MW) of power from renewable sources is equal to half of the city's electrical demand. Consumers are usually charged for electricity by the kilowatt-hour - one thousand watts of electricity used over the course of one hour. The renewable energy that will be delivered to the people of Houston is equal to 623,000,000 kilowatt hours (kWh), or 623,000 megawatt hours (mWh) - enough to power 55,000 homes.

This new purchase, at least for the next two years, makes Houston the largest municipal buyer in the nation. The eco-fri

we'll see how it goes in the longer run. So far, Houston has done at least a good job cleaning up its terribly polluted air.

Houston to become the capital of renewable energy in the United States? Houston, in the middle of drilling and crude oil wells, they are buying two million dollars of Renewable Energy? I didn't think they knew about renewable anything. Make It So, as long as the electricty is cost effective and does Not cost more than other sources. Take care of your rate payers and no increase in the cost of necessary utilities!
Will wonders never cease! Next will be the second coming, a highly effective mass transist system, high mpg vehicles and pickups driven for what they are intended for and Not as daily driver one person vehicles! OMG! What Next?
It's Not Easy Being Green!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Being one the world's major oil cities this Eco-capitol thing may be a long time coming. Given the shipping channel there and all we'll see. As we all know everything is bigger in Texas!

EcoNutz in Texas? HELP!

This will likely be a losing proposition for the people but someone will profit handsomely, I'm sure.

What a stupid idea powering 55,000 homes and probably at a larger cost that everyone else has to pay for so they can make meaningless announcements.

Does the largest purchase by a muncipality make them the capital of renewable energy? I think that's stretching the point somewhat. Headline is a bit misleading.
