might be useful to look at diesel engines. May not require a decade of R&D.

Exploding Engine Could Reduce Fuel Consumption, very carefull timing of the fuel explosions to control the engine and produce power from the fuel. If something is not timed carefully or operates wrong, it goes boom! The combustion chamber must be very heavy duty to the max. But, what a savings in fuel costs if everything goes like it should. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, the vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

I guess this won't be an inexpensive engine...or be seen in autos anytime soon!! If the computer controlling the combustion goes haywire, you die!!
Don't we already have car bombs!!

Lots of cutting edge TECHNOLOGY never comes to market because of tech problems or cost! Automakers CLAIM they can make cars that get 100 MPG, but the cost would be much more expensive, slow accelerating cars that no one wants or could afford at $150,000 for a basic 4 seater!

The navy is not really into new and unproven technology. With the emphasises on tradition, I don't see it going anywhere more then a research ship.

Most engines that I am aware of are "exploding" engines.
Under control, of course.

An "exploding engine?" Isn't that what they had on (or was it under?) the Space Shuttles?

But the noise...the noise...and the weight required to house that explosion...and the lubricants that would have to stand up to that kind of speed...and of course, the metallurgy required...
But we did put men on the moon in less than a decade from the setting of that goal, so...
