Carmakers banking on traditional gasoline engines for near future

UPI -- Of all the new cars and concepts unveiled at the North American Auto Show in Detroit only a handful are all-electric or hybrids.

For all the "Green Car" promotion, it appears automakers have come to the conclusion the conventional internal combustion engine remains the industry's standard for the near future.

A study by the international tax, audit and advisory firm KPMG found while sales of electric vehicles hit a record last year, car company executives believe electrics won't account for more than 15 percent of total global new vehicle sales until at least 2025. That's when U.S. fuel economy standards will require vehicles to average 54.5 mph a gallon.

Manufacturers like Japan's Mazda are moving ahead with technologies like "SkyActiv," engineering out excess weight from vehicle ...

Hybrids that can still have the expensive battery issue as well as the extra $10,000 up front. Who wants that?

Been banking on it hard for the past 20! Hard to change that which is resisted with power, money and corruption. A change of attitude would help on a lot of people and businesses hearts and minds. I still believe if they researched biomass to biofuels starting as far back as when the Industrial Hemp Tax Stamp Act when through 75+ years ago, we might not be in this situation. Yes that particular fuel is troublesome in cold climates, but not in the south. The fiber in general is a renewable and recyclable source to replace most plastics. 75+ years behind in that research... Thanks Uncle Sam! I guess Government really does know best... NOT Oh and that 2025 deadline... If you have a car from 1995 UPKEEP it or convert the engine. Make the repairs yourself and get a kid in technical school...
