Blowout Could Tip Regulator Focus To Shallow-Water

Manufacturing.net -- Last week's blowout on a natural gas rig off the Louisiana coast could shift regulators' focus to shallow-water drilling and make an overhaul of safety equipment regulations more likely.

The rig, owned by Hercules Offshore and operated under contract to Walter Gas & Oil, spewed gas July 23 that eventually ignited. The fire damaged the Hercules 265, which was within days of wrapping up its drilling contract. No injuries were reported and 44 workers were evacuated before the fire began.

Authorities believe sand and sediment clogged the well the next day, shutting off the gas.

Interest is expected to focus on the apparent failure of the blowout preventer, a series of that's supposed to shut off flow from a well when drillers lose control.

Um, maybe they should beef up safety for all off-shore drilling sites.

Obviously the oil and gas industry still needs more focus by regulators...

No one enforces safety regulations. There will be more blowouts due to shortcuts being taken.

How about everyone just do your job, and not cut corners. It shouldn't matter if you are in shallow water, or deep water. Do it right.

"...The Walter blowout was the second incident in shallow water off Louisiana in less than a month...."

Too many "accidents" already!

If oil companies can't be trusted to follow safety procedures or at least have a backup blow-off preventer, then maybe they should not be allowed to have a license to drill in Gulf waters.
Fines seem to have no effect at all.

Seems like someone could make a lot of money if they were to develop a really good blowout preventer.

Too much government interference in private business (and in our private lives), but the blame belongs on the clueless citizens who elect these idiots into office whose only lot in life is to get re-elected.

" Ban the EPA and all gov't oversight and regulation! Industry regulates itself perfectly well."

What a joke! Time after time we've seen companies take shortcuts to increase profits regardless of safety. Do you own stock in a company that manufactures self-contained breathing apparatus?

Guys: Some of you all don't realize EVERY cost to produce oil and gas is ultimately paid for by YOU the consumer. So all of you who claim gouging all of the time need to get real! You are paying ALL of the costs including huge regulatory ones as well.

Things happen. Learn from your mistake! These accidents happen only once, then companies never do it again! They learn valuable lessons from such freak accidents, such one-off acts of God. They never fail to 'learn' and just continue cutting corners to save money and boost profits! Ban the EPA and all gov't oversight and regulation! Industry regulates itself perfectly well. The 'price' of fuel at the 'pump' is too high! Happy drilling! Herp derp.
