Americans driving less as car culture wanes

seattletimes -- Researchers don’t know exactly why, but Americans are driving less after vehicle use peaked in August 2007, then dropped sharply during the Great Recession, and has largely plateaued since, even though the economy is recovering and the population growing.

perhaps prices gotten too high? Or maybe, the newer generations are just too selfish that they can't divorce themselves from their gadgets enough to drive?

Cliff: it was a holiday weekend, so at least PD's blog entries would have been old.

Americans driving less as car culture wanes. No Jobs, High Vehicle Prices, High Fuel Prices, High Insurance Prices, Vehicle Registration, and Vehicle Maintenance costs - what incentive is there to own a vehicle and drive, drive, drive. There are many other distractions a young person can do besides own a vehicle and drive to where they want to go. Public transportation, have a relative drive them, bum a ride, or hitchhike are some other modes of transportation that does not cost very much. Owning a vehicle will never be an option for them.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Democrats and Republicans thinks throwing around their crap social ideals, along with playing world police, raising taxes and outsourcing jobs, have contributed to America's decline of the car culture, as well as the decline of a lot of other things (such as our liberties and quality of life). Hopefully we'll vote wisely..... yeah right.

if demand is lower, why are pump prices rising ? (don't tell me about a 3-5 cent decline over a week when prices rise 30 cents in ONE DAY before the decline starts...they NEVER drop 30 cents in one day).

Gasoline prices?

The price of gasoline is the root cause.

Driving less because of unemployment and no money.

But the truth seldom leaks out.

Using less and paying more; you know prices are manipulated for greedy speculators using the market as their plaything.

Make them take delivery of product and not just make paper trades. That will stop the nonsense.
