Think 'safety' whether it's a holiday, or not

GasBuddy Blog -- If you have a full-time job today then you certainly have something to celebrate and we hope you're enjoying your Labor Day weekend. Just remember to think 'safety first' and always avoid drinking and driving.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)announced its annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown on drunk drivers (Aug. 16-Sept. 2). This year's announcement included a special focus on the victims of drunk driving, as NHTSA data show that every three hours in the United States, a drunk-driving crash claims the life of someone who was not driving drunk.

"Drunk driving remains a serious, deadly crime that all too often destroys the lives of innocent victims," said Secretary Foxx. "We're sending...

Not sure why the last thought had to be added about kids being in school. There are several other points to mention about school zone safety in particular. But I doubt any drunk driver emphasis needs to be targeted at daily drivers in school zones or neighborhoods.

Killing someone while driving drunk should be treated as negligent homicide at least. Driving drunk is one of the stupidest acts a human can engage in.

Responsible drivers know this already. Drivers who could care less probably will not benefit by this warning.

DUI cases need longer jail time...mandatory jail time that a lawyer cannot get you out of...eventually some of these chronic offenders will get fired or face more economic losses that will hit them harder that maybe, possibly they will think twice. Or maybe not.

Drunk drivers are the most troublesome drivers because they insist that they are not drunk. There was a driver in Milwaukee who drove 14 miles in the wrong direction on the freeway before the police finally forced him into the retaining wall to stop him.

sjlevine - I had a brother killed by a fully loaded 18 wheeler that ran a red light. I am the one insulted. There was no justice for him. That happened many years ago and I keep reading these kinds of articles. For me, it is very depressing to read this being drilled on a regular basis as it brings up the pain I have endured for many years. So, it may insult some that have had loved ones killed for my previous comment, it insults me to read the article. YMMV

I think a lack of proper education has a lot to do with it. One example... Are drivers even taught that the left lane is the 'passing' lane? Judging by the number of people who are parked in the left lane not passing anybody, I doubt it. I'm not preaching, that's just a glaring example that comes to mind. Maybe we need a tiered education system. You take your initial driver ed. class at 15, get your license at 16, then after you've had a year of experience, you take a 200-level course at 17, then a year later a 300-level course at 18. If you have an at-fault accident, you start over. Just a thought.

Smoking and driving has the potential to kill. I know a couple people that have crashed while desperately trying to find the end off their cigarette when it landed in their lap while driving.

A young guy also crashed into my neighbors parked car last week and totalled it. He was checking his Facebook at the time.

I doubt those who have loved ones killed or injured, or those injured by, drunk drivers would agree with you, NightRider. In fact, your statement is an insult to them.

Too many people drive under the influence and without licenses or insurance. I recently observed a friend's courtroom and a good 80% of the cases were violations of probation for driving on a suspended license. If someone has NO license, it's a good bet they have NO insurance. These people put us all at risk.

yeah had a few almost cases over the weekend with a person driving around with their cell phone stuck to their ear. It seems it has gotten worse since the new laws took place where they could get pulled over. Go Figure!
