Texting Awareness Foundation reacts to report on voice texting

GasBuddy Blog -- On May 3, 2013, Texting Awareness Foundation commented on a new study confirming that voice text messaging is just as dangerous as hands-on texting.

According to Business Insider, the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A & M University, compared voice-to-text messaging and conventional texting in a driving situation. Christine Yager, who conducted the study, said, "In each case, drivers took about twice as long to react as they did when they weren't texting. Eye contact to the roadway also decreased, no matter which texting method was used."

The study indicated that drivers felt safer using voice text messaging and did not believe their driving skills were impaired. Contrary to common wisdom, voice-to-text messaging...

I agree with James C. Its no different if you have passengers in the car, drinking a cup of coffee, or smoking. You can not band everything. I multi-task all the time, I have to, b/c I'm a busy person. Driving takes discipline and you have to watch for the other idiots.

Distractions come in many forms, texting being only one form.

Parents need to teach children how to focus on the task(s) at hand and learn how to truly multitask as my mother did when she was running a wringer-washer.

Also, airplane pilots learn how to multitask, accomplishing many, many multitasks simultaneously!

It is called mental discipline!

optionally, play ping pong regularly! ...and avoid computer games!7747777

The issue is distractions and accepting that driving needs your full and undivided intention.

Back in the day, you had to drive to convenience store with a working pay phone to get the message out, often having to wait for some teenager to yak with her boyfriend. Then you put up with a grungy handset, noise in the parking lot, and a bad connection. But you had AM radio for a distraction.

Nothing you have to say or text is that important that it can't wait until you stop driving. You are not that profound.

Enough can not be said about the danger of drinking & driving and/or texting & driving. Need jamming devices installed on all cars.

Another day of this ridiculous story? So talking to yourself, singing in the car, talking to passengers, etc. must also be just as dangerous as voice texting. The Texting Awareness Foundation won't admit when they are wrong about something.

Today I have a prayer of thankfulness that we got RAIN last night. That is almost unheard of in Southern Calif in May. So now the Springs Fire in Ventura, Calif is 80% contained. Yahooooooooo.

Voice or manual texting is a real distraction but don't fret there are going to be new laws that will take care of it. The only problem is you cant legislate common sense.

Driver felt safer? perhaps they felt that way. Any dirstraction is just that. The radio, the heater, etc. The difference its those are short lived and occasional. Texting becomes a driving task like making phone calls.
You just can't legislate against stupid. But you can legislate that if there is an accident and it is proved they were texting. No insurance.
That would raise my attention.

Not surprising - it requires attention to activate the voice-to-text, and speaking deliberately after that.
