Oil embargo + 40: How far we've progressed in fuel economy

GasBuddy Blog -- Sometimes to fully appreciate where we're going, it's helpful to look back at where we were... That's what Angelo Young reports for the International Business Times.

Forty years ago Americans got a sour taste of Middle East geopolitics when oil-producing Arab countries used crude as a weapon against the United States for its support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War, proclaimed an oil embargo in the winter of 1973-74.

And as a result, the embargo forced crude oil prices to astronomical levels battering the global economy. And, it also woke up the U.S. and the rest of the world to its pattern of fuel consumption and served as a lasting catalyst for reduced usage and increased fuel economy.

Consider how far...

Old News! This was, as anyone old enough to remember, a farce! Oil tankers sat off the coast because all the on land storage tanks were full. Gas was being dumped in the desert because people weren't using it. It was just an excuse to jack up the price. I could purchase all the gas I wanted every time I fueled up during the whole time that this was going on. In fact, Super America advertized on TV here, "THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF GAS AT SUPER AMERICA."

Institutional memory being what it is, (that is amnesia) I fear we haven't progressed very far at all!

There was an urgency about renewable fuels then that dissapated when supplies increased with the higher prices......too bad they did not pursue it then!

And can you believe it? After 40 years we have not yet figured out how to work the Israelis and the Arabs to maintain a stable position in the area? As a country we just stick our collective heads into the sand and refuse to learn anything!

That was the firs recession of my lifetime. And most recessions ever since have been caused by OPEC raising prices overnight. Energy independence is the only way to remove their economic power over the rest of the world.

In some ways, the world still didn't learn everything they could have from that embargo. OPEC still has too much influence.

So now it isn't OPEC controling prices - it's the oil companies and refineries manipulatings prices by raising or lowering production - same problem just different people

Gotta add here--if we in THIS country began an oil embargo to all the nations WE send it to, we might have the blessing of lower fuel prices in exchange. Probably too much of a risk of loss of international relationships and friendships, though. And, likely money in the politicians' pockets.

The new form of oil embargo now rests in the hands of speculators and investors who set the price high so we pay it in gasoline. Seems like lately they are losing ground a little with price FINALLY below $100 a barrel. How long that will last is anyone's guess, but we can bet they won't take the loss for long without finding some way to gouge us again.

There have been great strides in freeing ourselves from OPEC dependence, even if it's now slavery to domestic masters.
