GM announces 'special edition' Corvette to mark 60th Anniversary

GasBuddy Blog -- Believe it or not, the Corvette's initial production began June 30, 1953 at Flint, Mich.

To mark the birthday Chevrolet is now turning out a special edition of the radically redesigned 2014 Corvette. Just 500 will be built, loaded with nearly every option available on the 2014 Corvette.

USA TODAY's James Healey says the base model starts at $51,995 including shipping. Figure on another $20k to cover the all the 'special edition' options.

Healey says the first Corvette two-seater was intended to give an American automaker something to rival the European two-seat sports cars of the time.

Only 300 of the 1953 model were made. More than 10 times as many were built the second year and it seemed a bright...

How many more days do we have to hear this story on here??? How about a story, "GM has finally learned how to make a diesel engine that actually works!" or GM fired 100 VP's to start, in an attempt at becoming profitable!" These 500 cars will add to their already substantial deficit, which Obummer has had us to subsidize!!!!

I am happy with my paid for 1998 6-speed convertible Corvette. I have no intention of spending the big bucks for a brand new one. No I did not buy my current Vette new!

Corvette, like the Harley Davidson is as much about image as substance. It is a American icon. Given the continuous improvements to handling, the engine, styling and mileage Chevrolet has an ongoing winner. It is not for everyone but is appropriately price for what it offers. All manufacturers work to offer an anniversary edition of the 'Special' vehicles. Honda gold wings, HD tourers, Jaguar and BMW all celebrate milestones of their vehcles that have sustained over time. It brings new attention that may have been forgotten except to the select few fans. Few will get them but for those who do, they will have special brag gin rights until the next special edition comes out. That is obviously worth something to someone. At least that is what Chevy is counting on.

Yes, old news. Nice car but far too rich for most people's blood. But those who have that kind of money, why not through it in this direction just for the heck of it!

Might be old news, but you can't blame GM for hyping this up and trying to create a lot of buzz and demand for this 'vette. With that price tag in this economy, I'm sure they want to make sure they sell them all.
