DOE to Build First Regional Gasoline Reserve to Strengthen Fuel Resiliency

GasBuddy Blog -- As part of the Obama Administration’s response to Superstorm Sandy, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz recently announced the creation of the first federal regional refined petroleum product reserve containing gasoline. Based on the Energy Department’s lessons learned from the major fuel supply disruption in the aftermath of the storm, the Department will establish two Northeast reserve locations near New York Harbor and in New England. Each location will store 500,000 barrels of gasoline, enough to provide some short-term relief in the event of significant disruptions. The new reserve complements the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, a one million barrel supply of diesel for the Northeast. Emergency withdrawals from NEHHOR were used for the...

That's nice. Do you think the Libs and Enviros would allow that?!!
Gasoline goes bad so the stock would have to be used and replenished on an ongoing basis.

A good idea, but I hope the DOE doesn't run it.

Doesn't taking 1,000,000 barrels of fuel out of the market impact prices?

I do not like that the government will be in control of these reserves which will have a short shelf life six months to a year at most. Will they be responsible to pay for repairs necessary after using the old stale gas they stored for too long?

As long as they don't put ethanol in it, it should last for a while.

DOE to Build First Regional Gasoline Reserve to Strengthen Fuel Resiliency. The creation of the Federal Regional Refined Petroleum Product Reserve containing gasoline. Based on the Energy Department’s lessons learned from the major fuel supply disruption in the aftermath of Superstrom Sandy, there will be two Northeast reserve locations near New York Harbor and in New England. Each location will store 500,000 barrels of gasoline, enough to provide some short term relief in the event of significant disruptions. The new reserve complements the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, a one million barrel supply of diesel for the Northeast.
***Doesn't gasoline go stale in time? They would have to cycle through the old gasoline and replace with new. **Add a fuel conditioner with stabilizers?
***Advertize the locations so the terroists know too....
***Make sure there are emergency generators at each gas station. ***Large generators at locations where the power was cut off to 'try' to resupply some loss of electricity. ***Place as many major power lines underground as possible.
**It may work or it could be expensive to use. **Building new refineries will not help!
Drive vehicles with high mpg, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

You still have to get the gas to where it is needed. typically during these catistrafic events road, rail and pipelines are disrupted. I hope the plan takes this into consideration.

Gasoline goes stale fairly quickly. I think it would be costly to add fuel stabilizer which makes gas fresh for a year or 2 years with a double dose.

How about just working harder on getting more fuel efficient and hybrid cars out there so we need less. Easier to store a smaller reserve.
