1,500 NY gas stations to share $17 million toward wiring for generators

GasBuddy Blog -- New York metro area gas stations in New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties, have begun receiving letters from the state to inform them that they must comply with a new law, which is aimed at providing wiring for generators to avoid the long lines, gas rationing and price gouging that ensued following Superstorm Sandy.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority will cover most, if not all, of the costs of the upgrades through grants. In all, more than 1,500 gas stations — or about half of all in the nine counties — have been identified for the $17 million federally funded program.

Stations that sell less than 75,000 gallons of gas per month are exempt.

one has to wonder, how much is being paid by NYC's taxpayers, many of whom never drive a car in their lives.

I expressed this idea to several after Sandy...you'd think the minds (or mindless) that "prepare/plan" for disasters would have had this wiring setup in existence everywhere many years ago.

I agree with "Rich-pa", all states need to do something like this, especially where there are natural disaster type situations...tornados, hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, major snowstorms, etc. Anything that could force people to leave their homes or shelter in place and then require that people leave their homes.

Fellow Right-...also as in CORRECT...-Thinking Americans! Be ForeWarned... there are HYPER-SENSITIVE Leftists (among the posting class and/or Admin types) trolling these messageboards engaged in a nit-picking whining campaign to suppress Conservative Political speech (YES, even here). Their approach is to try to intimate that the ONLY place for political commentary is in the political forum. On one level I get that, but on another, THIS, being a website and more specifically THIS messageboard forum, is about discussion of ENERGY, specifically GASOLINE, and the prices thereof?! THAT being the case, the issue of ENERGY POLICY is ALWAYS going to be tied to politics!!! Sorry Leftists! You will ALWAYS lose on this subject!!!

What a friggin' waste of hard-earned taxpayer money! Nothing like a good government mandate to do just that.

I would think the feds could find a better place to spend $17 mill. exasperating how the govt. can waste taxpayer money and just go deeper in debt.

I think in this case, the consumers complained about unavailability of fuel and the legislators responded with legislation. So, the consumers get what they asked for.

So federally funded means taxpayer funded.

And the small stations that will be hurt the most are exempt which means they get no help in putting in backup power.

And meanwhile the rich get richer
